Grants Scores

Every grant application is anonymously reviewed and scored by three Grant Readers. The Grant Readers review and evaluate applications based on the information provided by student applicants in their applications, the budget worksheet, and required supporting materials. Grant readers review and score applications based on the quality of an application, the purpose for which funding is sought and relationship to the student's degree program, benefits the proposed activity offers the student, how well the proposed activities fit the overall mission of the grant funding program, whether the applicants has provided detailed budget information and supporting documentation, and any other supporting documentation required.

The raw scores obtained from the three Grant Readers are normalized by multiplying by the average of all reader scores and then dividing by the average of the individual Grant Reader’s scores. When the difference between the high and low normalized scores for an application exceeds twenty-five points of the total possible score (100 points), two (2) additional readers evaluate the proposal. From these scores, the highest and lowest are dropped, and the three (3) remaining scores are accepted regardless of the spread between them.

Scoring Process:

GPSA relies on the support of graduate students in evaluating and scoring the applications. Applications are read and scored anonymously by three (3) Grant Readers. The scoring process often takes 3-4 weeks. Raw scores obtained from reader’s are normalized by using the formula below:

The normalized ranking of all scores determines which applicants recieve funding. The number of applications that can be funded in any given period may vary based on the availablility of funding. GPSA works with UNM staff to determine the amount of funding that is available in any given year.
