Finance Director – Soumyodipta KarmakarMore About The Finace Chair...- Soumyodipta Karmakar is a 5th-year PhD candidate in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of New Mexico. His research focuses on theoretical cosmology and dark matter physics, with a particular emphasis on understanding the fundamental nature of dark matter through the study of Milky Way satellite galaxies. He combines advanced computational astrophysics with machine learning techniques, high-performance computing, and statistical modeling. Soumyodipta has presented his work at the APS Global Physics Summit in Anaheim, California, and the international conference in Valencia, Spain. He has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, such as The Astrophysical Journal, Symmetry, and New Astronomy. In addition to his academic pursuits, Soumyodipta is actively involved in student leadership and service at UNM. He has served as Vice-President of the Indian Student Association, Co-President of the Physics & Astronomy Graduate Student Association, and Treasurer of the Hindu YUVA Chapter. He is passionate about community engagement, science outreach, and fostering opportunities for graduate student success. Outside of academia, he enjoys cooking, Indian classical music, volunteering, and various sports.

Grants Director – Bhawana KafleMore About the Grants Chair...- Bhawana Kafle is a current Master of Health Administration (MHA) student at the University of New Mexico. She completed her undergraduate degree in Public Health at CIST College in Nepal, where she also worked as a Research Assistant with experience in WASH, micro health projects, and community health initiatives. Bhawana has extensive leadership and service experience, serving in the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) as Public Relations & Development Director and Grants Director. She has also held multiple leadership roles in Nepal, including President of the Student Welfare Society and Vice President of AIESEC Kathmandu, along with being a fellowship member of several governance and youth leadership programs. Her volunteer experience spans community, university, and state levels, including advocacy for mental health and social connection. Bhawana’s research and professional interests focus on health systems improvement, policy development, and advancing community well-being through strategic and inclusive initiatives.

Development Director– Ashik IstiakMore About the Public Relations Director...- Ashik Istiak is currently a PhD Candidate at the Department of American Studies at the University of New Mexico. Prior to this, he earned his second Master’s in North American Studies from the University of Cologne, Germany. He serves as one of the peer reviewers for the Journal of Postcolonial Writing, a Routledge: Taylor & Francis Q1 journal. He has published 18 research articles to date. His scholarly works appear in esteemed Routledge journals such as African Studies and Fat Studies, as well as the internationally recognized Wíčazo Ša Review from Minnesota University Press. In Bangladesh, his articles have been featured in publications including Crossings, Harvest, and Praxis, among others. Before moving to the United States, he was an Assistant Professor in the English department at Green University of Bangladesh for six years. His research interests encompass Indigenous literature, Indigenous feminisms, trickster narratives, slave and neo-slave narratives, Jim Crow America, body positivity, and postcolonial literature.

Sustainability Director – Isabelle Van DykeMore About the Sustainability Director...- Isabelle Van Dyke is a dedicated environmental advocate currently pursuing her Master of Public Administration at the University of New Mexico. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she focused on sustainable development, political ecology, and environmental policy. Isabelle brings experience in both nonprofit and scientific settings, having worked on food sustainability initiatives and in environmental lab operations. Passionate about urban planning and community engagement, she is committed to advancing sustainability efforts within the GPSA and the broader UNM community. In her free time, she surfs, runs, and hangs out with her cat, Velcro.
